Inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2001 and a Golden Shoe Award recipient in 1996, Henry Campbell became the inaugural Lifetime Achievement Award honoree on March 30, 2014.

Henry’s running journey began in 1979 when his daughter coaxed him into jogging around the block. Overweight and winded, he collapsed inside the house, later joking he didn’t want neighbors seeing him “dying in the front yard.” That moment sparked a transformation: within five months he lost 45 pounds, ran his first 10K, and began what became more than 580 races by 2001. Rosie, his wife, accompanied him to nearly every one.

As SCR President from 1980–1983, Henry expanded the club from 70 to over 400 members, grew the newsletter, affiliated with RRCA, and launched the Runner of the Year series. Known for his ingenuity, he hand-painted marathon course signs, created SCR’s manual scoring system (used on more than 80,000 finish cards), and measured countless racecourses.

Though not without setbacks—like the infamous Merritt Island Mall 5K “disaster”—Henry’s leadership focused on serving runners above all else. He went on to direct dozens of events and was known for encouraging struggling runners mid-race. His dedication, creativity, and generosity shaped SCR into the thriving community it is today.
