EAT MY CRUST 5K DELIVERS

The grand finale in the SCR Runner of the Year Series was fast and fun from start to finish. A light early morning drizzle gave way to near-perfect racing weather — overcast skies, no sun, and a cool 68°F. Many of the Space Coast Runners members who toed the start line on Viera High School’s track  were racing for ROY points to solidify their standing in the 2025 – 2026 series or scoring a perfect “10” for the Ran All Races Challenge. Logan Chapman, 21, from Port St John not only needed to win for ROY points but he had his eye on the course record of 15:53.7 set by Michael Toppi in 2021.

Chapman crossed the finish line in a swift 16:08 – although not the 5K record, the win did secure his spot as this year’s SCR Male Overall Runner of the Year  in the series. Melbourne’s Ryan Miller, 28, was second in 16:58 and Carson Groh, 18, was third in 17:10. Groh also racked up awards as the Top Male High School Finisher and 1st Place Pizza Delivery Challenge which saw him carry a pizza box the entire 3.1 miles of the race. Fun fact: 52 runners participated in this year’s Pizza Delivery Challenge.

For the females, Ilea Heft of Merritt Island claimed the overall title in a commanding 19:58, crossing the line at a 6:25 pace to earn her well-deserved victory. Sheyla Fisher of Orlando turned in a time of 21:20 for second place, while Viera’s own Heather Burnham delighted the home crowd with a 23:03 to round out the podium. All three women put on a clinic on what near-perfect racing conditions can do for a determined runner.

900 finishers received Joey Pepperoni medals as they crossed the line at the 14th running of the 5K. Eat My Crust raised over $25,000 which benefits Viera High Athletics and Clubs and Space Coast Early Steps.  

Notable Race Day Highlights

  • Logan Chapman and James Chapman of Port St. John swept the Male Overall and Male Grandmasters titles — a remarkable father-son performance on race day.
  •  Joseph Dreher pulled double duty — finishing as Male Masters champion AND 2nd place in the Pizza Delivery Challenge while carrying a pizza box to a 5:36 pace.
  • Dodie Johnson, 88, was the oldest finisher of the day. She also received 2nd place in the new 85+ age group category.
  • Space Coast Runners placed 3rd in the Co-Ed Team division. Scoring for the team were Ariana Quinones-Natal, John Schumacher, Paul Woodbury, Noah Wright and Gavin Mentillo.                 
  •  Space Coast Runners 70+ men took first place in the All Male Team division. Scoring for the team were Bud Timmons, Thomas Stokes, Gary Castner, Ray Brown and Vern Thomas.
