On June 6, 2015, Bernie Sher became the second recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award. A runner, Ironman triathlete, cancer survivor, and longtime volunteer coach, Bernie inspired athletes across all distances.
In 2003, he rescued the struggling Space Coast Marathon by moving it to a scenic course, instituting team captains, and adding a pasta dinner featuring Hal Higdon. The result: record participation, a net profit of $10,000, and the largest charitable donation in SCR history at the time.
Through marathon training camps and coaching clinics, “Coach Bernie” helped countless runners achieve personal bests. Known for his encouragement, persistence, and dedication, Bernie’s impact extended far beyond his own achievements—he transformed SCR’s signature event and mentored generations of athletes.
